Special Editions

A special edition Galaxy S20+ 5G BTS Edition in the exclusive "Haze Purple" color was also introduced in the summer of 2020".

Photo system

The S20+ is distinguished by its advanced four-camera system housed in a rectangular module in the upper left corner of the device. The design of the camera module resembles the solutions used in the iPhone 11 and Google Pixel 4. In addition to the standard set of lenses, the S20+ is equipped with an additional Time-of-Flight sensor, dubbed by the manufacturer as "DepthVision Camera".

Innovations in charging

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ is part of the first line of smartphones to receive USB fast charging certification from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). The device offers up to 25W of wired charging via the USB-C port and supports up to 15W of Qi inductive charging. In addition, the smartphone is equipped with the "Samsung PowerShare" function, which allows wireless charging of other Qi-compatible devices using energy from its own battery.

Technical specifications

Processors

Samsung Galaxy S20+ is equipped with two processor variants, depending on the target market. The international model uses the Exynos 990 system-on-chip, while the versions for the US, Canadian, Korean, Chinese and Japanese markets are based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor.

Display and interface

The device is equipped with an advanced Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 1440p resolution. The 6.7-inch screen features curved edges and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The display supports HDR10+ technology and advanced tonal mapping (dynamic tone mapping). An important innovation is the use of a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which is double that of the previous generation. An ultrasonic fingerprint reader integrated into the screen is used to unlock the device.

Memory

The S20+ offers two RAM variants: a basic 8 GB and an expanded 12 GB. In terms of internal memory, three options are available: standard 128 GB, and expanded 256 GB and 512 GB. The device additionally allows for expansion of storage space via a microSD card with a capacity of up to 1 TB.

Power system

The smartphone is equipped with a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh. The charging system supports:

- Wired charging via USB-C with up to 25 watts of power

- Qi wireless charging with up to 15 watts of power

- "Samsung PowerShare" reverse charging function to wirelessly charge other devices with 4.5 watts of power

Connectivity

The S20+ supports 5G connectivity as standard, although LTE variants are also available in select markets. It is worth noting that only Verizon models are compatible with millimeter-wave networks with increased capacity. Compared to previous generations, the 3.5mm headphone jack has been abandoned.

Photo opportunities

Galaxy S20+ camera features significant improvements over predecessors. The photo module consists of four lenses:

- Main sensor with 12 megapixel resolution with fixed aperture

- 12 megapixel ultra-wide angle lens

- 64 megapixel telephoto lens with "Space Zoom" support:

- 3x hybrid zoom (referred to as "Hybrid Optic Zoom")

- 30x digital zoom

- Time-of-Flight sensor called "DepthVision Camera"

Video capabilities

Front camera can record video in 2160p resolution. A new "Single Take" shooting mode has been introduced, allowing simultaneous use of different sensors to take photos and record video. The S20+ is capable of recording 8K video footage at 24 frames per second at a bit rate of 80 Mbps, which translates to the use of about 600 MB of memory per minute of recording. 8K function uses 64-megapixel telephoto sensor.

The device supports a variety of video recording modes, including the ability to record at 720p30, 1080p30 or 4k30 resolutions with HDR10+. HEVC encoding without HDR10+ is also available.

Software and technical problems

Operating system and updates

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ debuted with Android 10 pre-installed, featuring the manufacturer's proprietary One UI 2.1 overlay. The operating system update schedule was as follows:

- Early December 2020: update to Android 11 with One UI overlay 3.0

- January 2022: introduction of Android 12 along with One UI 4.0

- November 2022: upgrade to Android 13 with the latest version of One UI 5.0

Technical support

on August 18, 2020, Samsung announced a landmark decision regarding its software update policy. All variants of the S20 series, including the S20+ model, come with a three-year Android update warranty and a four-year security update warranty.

Identified technical problems

Camera problems

Even before the official release of the device, reviewers reported problems with auto focus and excessive skin smoothing in photos. Samsung has taken corrective action, but on models equipped with the Exynos processor, autofocus problems persisted even after the release of a dedicated update.

Problems with GPS

Users of the version equipped with the Snapdragon processor reported difficulties in getting a stable GPS connection.

Problems with Exynos processor

Models using the Exynos processor have suffered from device overheating issues.

Problems with the display

After one software update, some users reported the appearance of a green tint to the screen.

Problems in the Indian version

A specific display issue was reported in India - after updating to One UI 4.01, a vertical line appeared on the screens of some devices. The problem affected devices whose warranty period has already ended. Samsung India has classified these cases as user-induced damage, setting the cost of replacing the screen at around 16,000 Indian rupees. The situation has caused significant dissatisfaction among users, with about a thousand people reporting the problem via social media, and some deciding to take legal action. To date, Samsung India has not officially acknowledged the existence of this problem.

Security features and special functions

The upday news aggregation app, developed in partnership with Axel Springer SE, was pre-installed on European S20+ models. This application could send notifications to users.

Special editions of the software

Samsung tailored the software to the specific requirements of different markets and partners, as exemplified by the introduction of special versions of the system for specific operators or regions. This approach demonstrates the flexibility of the manufacturer to adapt to local requirements and user needs, while maintaining consistency in the core functions of the operating system.

Military and governmental aspects

Military context

In May 2020, Samsung expanded the S20 product line with a special tactical edition, highlighting the potential of the hardware platform used in the S20+ model. The decision showed that the architecture and technical capabilities of the basic S20+ model were advanced enough to serve as a base for military applications.

Government certification

The introduction of the tactical version confirmed that the fundamental design of the S20 series, including the S20+ model, meets stringent safety requirements. The platform has been approved as a component in the Commercial Solutions for Classified Program (CSfC), demonstrating the high level of security applied across the product line.

Technical capabilities

The base design of the S20+, which was used in the development of the tactical version, has demonstrated the potential to support advanced features such as:

- Ability to integrate with tactical communication systems

- Compatibility with mission systems

- Potential for expansion with specialized military applications

- High performance in harsh operating conditions

Significance for the civilian sector

The development of the tactical version highlighted the technological advancement of the standard S20+ model, demonstrating:

- High reliability of the hardware platform

- Advanced security capabilities

- Potential for adaptation for specialized applications
