Samsung Galaxy S10

Samsung Galaxy S10 is an Android smartphone that debuted as the flagship model of South Korean manufacturer Samsung Electronics in 2019. The device was unveiled at the "Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2019" event on February 20, 2019, with a commercial launch on March 6, 2019 in the United States and Australia, and in other international markets on March 8, 2019.

The S10 features an advanced three-camera system: a 12 MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and 52mm focal length, offering 2x optical zoom; a 12 MP main wide-angle lens with variable f/1.5-2.4 aperture and 26mm focal length; and a 16 MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and 12mm focal length. All modules support Super Steady video technology, providing image stabilization during recording.

The S10 represents the tenth generation of the Galaxy S series and was launched in the anniversary year of the product line. Samsung, continuing the strategy initiated with the Galaxy S6, has decided to introduce several variants of the device. In addition to the standard S10, the portfolio also includes the compact S10e, the larger S10+, and the 5G-capable S10 5G model. In 2020, the offering was supplemented with a mid-shelf version of the S10 Lite.

The starting price of the entry-level Galaxy S10 model has been set at $899 in the United States and £799 in the United Kingdom. The device was replaced by the Galaxy S20 model, which was released on March 6, 2020. The Galaxy S10 stood out from the competition with an innovative approach to the design of the front panel, where a distinctive camera cutout was used in the upper right corner of the screen, a departure from previous Samsung smartphone solutions.

Technical Specifications

Samsung Galaxy S10 features an innovative 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with 1440p resolution. The screen features support for HDR10+ technology and an advanced dynamic tone mapping system. A distinctive design element is the curved edges of the display, which smoothly transition to the side bezels of the device. An innovative solution is the placement of the front camera in a circular cutout in the upper right corner of the screen. Samsung also used an ultrasonic fingerprint reader integrated into the surface of the display, which provides higher performance compared to optical readers used in competing devices. Due to the technology used, the manufacturer has opted for a pre-installed plastic protective film to ensure compatibility with the reader.

Depending on the sales region, the Galaxy S10 is powered by different chips: the international market uses the Exynos 9820 processor, while models for the US, Canadian and Chinese markets use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip. The smartphone is available in variants with 128GB or 512GB of internal storage, accompanied by 8GB of RAM. Power is supplied by a 3400 mAh battery, supporting Qi wireless charging technology. Unique feature allows you to use your smartphone as a powerbank to charge other Qi compatible devices.

The camera system on the Galaxy S10 consists of three lenses: a 12-megapixel main lens with dual aperture, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens. The camera module was taken from the Note 9 and expanded with an additional ultra-wide-angle lens. Camera suite offers 4K video recording with HDR10+ support. The camera's software has been enhanced with a "Shot Suggestion" function to help users with frame composition, and "Artistic Live Filters" for creating artistic effects. Also added is the ability to directly post photos on Instagram. In manual mode it is possible to extend the exposure time to 10 seconds.

The Galaxy S10 uses an advanced heat-tube-based cooling system that effectively dissipates heat from the device's most stressed components. The smartphone is available in a wide range of colors, including variants: Prism White, Prism Black, Prism Green, Prism Blue, Prism Silver, Cardinal Red, Flamingo Pink and Smoke Blue.

Software and Technical Problems

Samsung Galaxy S10 debuted with Android 9.0 "Pie" pre-installed. It was the manufacturer's first smartphone to feature a completely redesigned system overlay called One UI. The new user interface is designed to improve the ergonomics of operating devices with large screens. A distinctive feature of One UI is the thoughtful placement of key interface elements in system applications - most of the content has been moved to the central part of the screen, while navigation elements and additional options have been placed at the bottom of the display, making them easier to use with one hand.

The history of the Galaxy S10 operating system update began with the release of the Android 10 update on November 28, 2019, which also introduced One UI version 2.0. The watershed moment for users was Samsung's announcement on August 18, 2020, that all variants of the S10 series will receive Android updates for three consecutive generations. According to the official list released by the manufacturer on December 2, 2020, the availability of an update to Android 11 with the One UI overlay has been confirmed 3.0.

The last major operating system update for the Galaxy S10 was the release of Android 12 with the One UI 4 overlay, which took place in January 2022. Technical support for the S10 series ended in April 2023, with the last security update dated March 2023.

A major security vulnerability related to the fingerprint reader has been discovered while using the Galaxy S10. The problem was that unauthorized people could unlock the phone using the silicone protective film. The same vulnerability was also observed in the Note 10 model. Samsung responded to the reported problem by issuing a security update on October 23, 2019. Some users also reported experiencing software bugs that caused overlapping navigation buttons and shortcuts to recently used applications. This problem has been resolved in the next system update.

Reviews and Sales Results

Samsung Galaxy S10 has received a positive reception from industry experts and consumers alike. Dan Seifert of The Verge gave the device a high rating of 8.5/10, particularly appreciating the quality of the display, performance, battery life and comprehensive camera system. In his review, however, he pointed out the slower and less accurate performance of the fingerprint reader built into the screen and the poorer quality of photos in low-light conditions compared to the Google Pixel 3.

A detailed technical analysis was conducted by Andrei Frumusanu of AnandTech, who noted a significant improvement in the performance of the Exynos 9820 processor compared to the previous generation (Exynos 9810). Despite this, the international version with the Exynos processor was still inferior in performance to the Snapdragon 855-equipped variant. An interesting finding was that despite its lower energy efficiency, the Exynos-based model scored better in the battery life test for web browsing, outperforming the Snapdragon-based variant by 0.33 hours. However, in the PCMark test, the result was the opposite - the Exynos version ran 0.55 hours shorter.

Well-known technology reviewer Marques Brownlee praised the new One UI for improving one-handed operation. In his assessment, he found the Galaxy S10 to be one of the few smartphones worth its high price tag. Jeffrey Van Camp of Wired magazine gave the device a rating of 9/10, appreciating the bezel-less design, innovative features, ultrasonic fingerprint reader and the presence of a headphone jack. Among the drawbacks, he mentioned the quality of night photos (second only to the Pixel 3), the complicated settings menu, and the slow performance of the wireless power sharing feature.

In terms of photographic capabilities, the Galaxy S10 has been extensively tested by the specialized portal DXOMARK. In the photo category, it received 114 points, while in the video category it received 97 points. Sales results confirmed the commercial success of the model, surpassing the results achieved by its predecessor, the Galaxy S9. The S10+ variant was the most popular on the market, followed by the standard S10, and finally the compact S10e model.
